The James M. Cox Foundation has given Sharp HealthCare Foundation a $500,000 grant for its technology immersion lab at the future Prebys Innovation and Education Center in Kearny Mesa. The foundation is the charitable arm of Cox Enterprises, the parent company of Cox Communications.
The donation will help fund the Prebys Innovation and Education Center’s five simulation labs, where nurses and other medical caregivers will learn technical acute and soft skills. The simulation rooms will provide hands-on training to prepare workers for an ICU environment and simulate the chaotic nature of an emergency room.
Construction is currently underway on the center, located on the campus of Sharp HealthCare’s headquarters at 8695 Spectrum Center Blvd. in Kearny Mesa, with the facility slated to open in 2023.
“Cox has been a leader in communication and information technology innovation, and the Cox Foundation grant to create the technology immersion lab in the Prebys Innovation and Education Center is a forward-thinking demonstration of their leadership in philanthropy,” said Bill Littlejohn, senior VP and CEO of the Foundations of Sharp HealthCare.
In addition to the $500,000 grant, Cox Communications previously made a $75,000 donation to the project. Both donations were made during a match campaign by the Conrad Prebys Foundation, which brings the grants’ impact to a total of $1.15 million.
The James M. Cox Foundation is named in honor of Cox Enterprises’ founder, who was Ohio’s first three-term governor and the 1920 Democratic nominee for president of the United States.

Clearity, a San Diego-based nonprofit focused on ovarian cancer, raised close to $118,000 at its annual Teal Revolution Walk and fundraiser.
Donning teal t-shirts, San Diegans gathered in late May at Liberty Station in support of women with ovarian cancer. One of the highlights of the event was when all participants formed the largest teal ribbon of people ever created.
With demand for its services increasing both locally and nationwide, Clarity says funds are needed to increase the organization’s capacity to deliver the personalized counselling and education services women and their families need to better understand and manage their diagnosis. All Clearity programs are free, thanks to San Diego-based supporters including the County of San Diego, The Conrad Prebys Foundation, Illumina, Mersana Therapeutics, Inc. as well as countless individuals.

St. Paul’s Senior Services has hired Karen Mitchell-Keels in the newly created position of Corporate Nurse. She will oversee infection control and required nurse training as well as ensure the delivery of best-in-class nursing services throughout all of St. Paul’s programs, including St. Paul’s Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE).
“The new position was created to have corporate-level support of our nursing staff, especially as we continue to grow,” said Tim Frazier, VP and corporate administrative officer at St. Paul’s. “We wanted to ensure ongoing delivery of outstanding nursing services, to coordinate efforts in maintaining standards of practice, and to provide an environment of mutual support.”
