Tom Karlo retired from KPBS in 2020 and is now the local public media center’s general manager emeritus. Karlo began his career at KPBS in 1973 as a part-time assistant while studying television and film at SDSU, serving in numerous roles from assistant cameraman to associate general manager of business, finance and operations. He was named general manager in 2009 and during more than a decade at the helm, the station merged the TV, radio and digital departments into one content producing center. KPBS won 419 journalism awards and saw impressive staff, audience and fundraising growth during his leadership.
