Karen Haynes excelled for more than three decades as a university administrator. Haynes was president of California State University San Marcos from 2004 until her retirement in 2019. At CSUSM, she oversaw record expansion of the North County campus footprint and student population. She was president of the University of Houston-Victoria from 1995 to 2004 and dean of the graduate school of social work at the University of Houston from 1985 to 1995. She is a trustee of Sanford Burnham Prebys, the research institute on Torrey Pines Mesa
