SD500 2022: K. Barry Sharpless

PROFESSOR, SCRIPPS RESEARCH

In 2022, Professor K. Barry Sharpless was awarded a Nobel Prize – his second – for his groundbreaking research in developing “click chemistry” – an ingenious method for building molecules. Sharpless also won a Nobel in Chemistry in 2021 for his work on chirally catalyzed oxidation reactions. Before joining Scripps Research, he was a professor of chemistry at MIT and Stanford. Today, the Sharpless lab at Scripps pursues useful new reactivity and general methods for selectively controlling chemical reactions
