Golf Pro Daniel Berger Signs Deal With Callaway

Carlsbad-based Callaway Golf Co. said Jan. 5 that it has signed Daniel Berger to an endorsement deal.

Berger, 23, was PGA Rookie of the Year in 2015. He had his first PGA Tour win in June at the FedEx St. Jude Classic in Memphis, Tenn., winning nearly $3.3 million.

Berger previously played for the Florida State Seminoles and turned pro at age 20.

Callaway’s team includes other big names in golf such as Phil Mickelson.

The company said Berger will add to its extensive list of star players in their 20s.

The new position as a Callaway Golf staff pro will mean a wardrobe change for Berger. He won the St. Jude Classic wearing a bright orange Adidas shirt and a TaylorMade cap. TaylorMade is also part of Carlsbad’s golf industry cluster.

Separately, Callaway (NYSE: ELY) announced two new products on Jan. 4: the Great Big Bertha Epic Sub Zero Driver with Jailbreak Technology, and the Great Big Bertha Epic Driver With Jailbreak Technology.

“Jailbreak Technology creates a new and remarkably efficient working relationship between the [club’s] face, crown and sole to promote faster ball speed across more of the face to give the golfer more distance,” said Alan Hocknell, Callaway’s senior vice president of R&D, in a statement.
