Venue Updates: More Beer and Food Coming Up

On July 19, Del Mar is expected to see the opening of Viewpoint Brewing Co., billed by operators as that city’s first craft beer brewery. A company statement said the brewery restaurant, owned by Charles Koll at 2201 San Dieguito Drive near Jimmy Durante Boulevard, overlooks the scenic San Dieguito Lagoon, directly across from the county fairgrounds.

Much further along in its rise as a budding craft brew hub is the city of Imperial Beach. Coronado Brewing Co. has an existing satellite brewhouse near that city’s waterfront, with a new tasting room coming soon at the mixed-use Bikeway Village, and San Diego’s Mike Hess Brewing Co. plans to debut its own Imperial Beach tasting room by early 2018.

Now comes word, from the beer-news publication West Coaster, that Temecula’s Ironfire Brewing Co. is in early talks with local chef-entrepreneur Steve Brown on a proposed restaurant project in Imperial Beach called The Shipping Yard, incorporating repurposed shipping containers and targeting a site at Date Avenue and Seacoast Drive.

In downtown San Diego, a July opening is expected for The Smoking Gun restaurant and a coffee venue called Spill the Beans, both slated to operate at 555 Market St. in a large Gaslamp Quarter space that formerly housed Blush Ice Bar. Both locations will be run by Eric Johnson and Chef Kevin Templeton, with the menu at Smoking Gun (named for the shooting range that once occupied the basement) including sustainable meat and vegetable offerings.
