USS Midway Museum Holding Workshops on Proposed Park

Local residents and businesses can give their input at three public workshops being presented by the USS Midway Museum in San Diego to discuss a new park and architectural element proposed for Navy Pier.

The meetings are set for Nov. 29 and Dec. 6 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.; and Dec. 10 from 9 to 11 a.m. They will be held at the Port of San Diego’s Administration Building, 3165 Pacific Highway.

A port district statement said the workshops will be presented by the architecture firm Tucker Sadler Architects Inc., on behalf of the USS Midway. While the museum is a port district tenant, the proposal is not a Port of San Diego project.

The museum, at 910 N. Harbor Drive, has a concept proposal for a veteran’s memorial park, stemming from terms of its 2001 entitlement process. As part of its lease agreement with the port district, the museum is required to provide a plan and project description for a park on Navy Pier no later than Oct. 1, 2012.

While the port district has not taken a formal stance on the museum project, the current port master plan says a 5.7-acre memorial park is a planning goal of the district, as it encourages development of more public open space.
