Port of San Diego officials have approved concept plans for a public park at the former site of Lane Field in downtown San Diego.
Port commissioners on March 6 backed a conceptual site plan for a 2-acre setback park and plaza to be located at the northeast corner of the intersection of West Broadway and North Harbor Drive, along the North Embarcadero waterfront district.
The park would be located adjacent to a parcel where a private development group has proposed new hotels with up to 800 total rooms.
A port district statement said the park is being designed as an urban space reflecting the history and character of the neighborhood surrounding the former minor league ballpark property. The park’s designer, Civitas Inc., conducted three public outreach meetings to gather input.
The concept design will next be presented to the California Coastal Commission at its April meeting, the statement said. The park was conceived after the coastal commission required the port district to add 2 acres of public space to the first phase of planned North Embarcadero improvements.
Landscaping, lighting, site furnishings and other elements at the park would complement work being done elsewhere on the North Embarcadero.
