New Center Shines Spotlight on $1B Airport Project

The Green Build Discovery Center has opened at San Diego International Airport, officials say. The center is geared to educating the public on eco-friendly improvements included in Lindbergh Field’s ongoing $1 billion renovation.

A March 1 statement from the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, which operates Lindbergh Field, said the Discovery Center is located in the pre-security area on the second floor of Terminal 2. It uses informational panels, color renderings and video to tell the story of the Green Build project.

The center itself uses sustainable items, such as biodegradable materials and paste, and recycled paper products. It is open daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Green Build will double the size of Terminal 2 West and add 10 aircraft gates, a dual-level roadway, new shops and restaurants, along with public art and expanded public spaces. It is scheduled for completion in 2013.

The project incorporates sustainability features with the aim of attaining Silver certification in the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, program.
