Independent hotel operator Bartell Hotels has broken ground on a $13 million expansion at its Holiday Inn San Diego Bayside, the company announced June 6.
A statement from San Diego-based Bartell said the four-story, 44,000-square-foot expansion is expected to be completed in summer 2013, and the hotel plans to add 50 workers. The property is at 4875 N. Harbor Drive.
The renovation will include a new “grand entrance” featuring a 2,000-square-foot lobby with 18-foot ceilings; 57 oversized guest rooms and suites with bay views; a 3,400-square-foot ballroom; and a boardroom with the latest technology. Following the expansion, the total number of guest rooms will be 291, including 13 suites.
General Manager Bob Hilborn said the lobby is being designed to provide “a dramatic sense of arrival” and a gateway to historic Point Loma, and design themes for the overall project reflect the location on San Diego Bay and America’s Cup Harbor.
The expansion’s architect is Joseph Wong Design Associates, and the interior design firm is Liz Bartell Design, the statement said.
Founded in 1975, Bartell Hotels operates seven local hotels, six restaurants, three marinas and Humphreys Concerts by the Bay. Its other hotels include The Dana on Mission Bay, Sheraton La Jolla Hotel and Humphreys Half Moon Inn & Suites.
