Airport’s Green Build Reaches Halfway Point

Lindbergh Field’s $1 billion Green Build improvement project, which adds 10 gates to the far western Terminal 2 along with a new dual roadway, is about halfway to completion, the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority said April 25.

“The project is on schedule and within budget, moving toward a summer 2013 opening date,” according to a statement from the government agency that manages the airport.

Construction crews are now working on the roadway system which involves pouring concrete decks and building two pedestrian bridges that connect smart curb pavilions to the terminal. The pavilions and technology contained in them will allow departing passengers to check their bags with their airline before entering the terminal.

Inside the terminal crews are also at work, building such items as a modern concession area called Sunset Cove, gate waiting areas, bathrooms and storage areas, the airport agency said.

At its peak, the project is employing about 1,000 construction workers, the airport authority said.
