Women, Water Mix Well for Conservation, Education at Library

The San Diego Women’s Foundation’s Annual Grants Celebration was one of the most inspirational nights of the year. More than 300 people came together for the event, which was held at the new Central Library and celebrated the newest Environment Community Partners as well as women who were instrumental in making the library a reality. A total of $166,000 was awarded to the grant recipients, who will use the money for programs that focus on water quality and conservation and that educate the community in this critical environmental issue for San Diego.

The nonprofit organizations were selected through a thorough vetting process and a final vote by all Women’s Foundation members. They are Friends of Albert Einstein Academies Water Education Station, $25,000; Friends of Balboa Park Plaza de Balboa Smartscape Project, $40,000; Friends of the Water Conservation Garden “Ms. Smarty-Plants Grows Earth Heroes & The Magic of Water,” $73,000; and San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum Water Wise Programs, $28,000.

“We are extremely pleased to award these funds to such an impressive list of committed and accomplished organizations,” said A.J. Frank, board president of the San Diego Women’s Foundation. “We have no doubt that these extraordinary organizations will make a difference and help make San Diego a better and more water-savvy region through their critical work and education in this area.”

The program was moderated by Gail Vetter Levin and included Darlene Shiley, Judith Harris, Katie Sullivan, Helen Griffith and Carmen Vann, who were honored for their unique contributions to the new library. Philanthropist and founding Women’s Foundation member Darlene Shiley, inspired by the collective efforts of great women, announced that she would match the first $25,000 in new members’ and friends’ contributions to the San Diego Women’s Foundation.

Partnerships With Industry announced exciting news that it is the only San Diego organization selected as a finalist in the “Communities with Drive” program, sponsored by Zipcar and Ford Motor Co. As one of 25 finalists from more than 400 entries, PWI is eligible to win $50,000 in cash as well as $15,450 in Zipcar credit to support the organization’s needs. Winners are voted on by the public at on.fb.me/1jwsmxR. PWI encourages people to vote to increase its chances of receiving the substantial prize money, enabling it to continue to provide vocational services and support to adults with intellectual and development disabilities. PWI will use the funds towards the purchase of a truck for its new document destruction program, which will help expand its vocational services and support to capable and enthusiastic workers. Each year, PWI assists more than 1,000 individuals through its four offices throughout San Diego County. In addition to the grand prize, three runners-up will receive $7,000 in cash and $8,100 in Zipcar credit for use of Zipcars. Additionally, all finalists are guaranteed to receive $2,000 in cash and $2,250 in Zipcar credit.

Wells Fargo & Co. announced that in honor of National Military Appreciation Month last month, it is donating $50,000 to the Veterans Association of North County. The donation will support the construction of its 10,000-square-foot resource center in Oceanside, enabling the association to better serve the North County military and veteran communities.

Also in celebration of Military Appreciation Month, Wells Fargo had special programs and offers for military members and their families in all 103 banking locations and 324 ATMs throughout May. Wells Fargo also sponsored the Armed Forces Day Operation Appreciation event in Oceanside.

In addition to helping military members and their families succeed financially; Wells Fargo continues to increase local support of veterans, active duty and their families. Last year, the company donated $400,000 to nonprofits that serve active duty military, their families and veterans. San Diego team members also volunteered thousands of hours to support the military community with activities such as decorating Balboa Naval Hospital for the holidays with the Warrior Foundation and creating welcome home bags for retuning military in partnership with the USO.
