Visionary Awards Cite the Leaders Who Make a Difference

LEAD San Diego announced the 2012 Visionary Awards recipients that are scheduled to be presented May 24 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront hotel. Father Joe Carroll will receive The Morgan Award; Betty Mohlenbrock, Graduate of the Year; Ronne Froman, The Ronald Kendrick Memorial Award for Regional Stewardship; Richard Atkinson, Economic Opportunity; and Hugo Torres Chabert, The Charles Nathanson Memorial Award for Cross-Border Regional Building. The Herbert G. Klein and the Community Spotlight awards will be announced the evening of the event … Walden Family Services recently received grants totaling $57,495 to support its foster care programs. The Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism donated $19,495 to help autistic foster youth; the McCarthy Family Foundation donated $15,000 to support programs for abused and neglected children that are not totally funded by government; In-N-Out Burger Foundation donated $6,000 to help support Walden’s Independent Futures program; and Day for Change donated $17,000 to support Walden’s wrap-around foster care services. “Walden believes that it is essential to continue to offer quality services to this very vulnerable group,” said Teresa Stivers, executive director of WFS … Torrey Pines Bank presented Women’s and Men’s Day — Making The Cut. The all day event was set in conjunction with the Famers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course and included a luncheon held in the PGA Tour’s professional driving range event tent. Lisa Nichols, author of “Chicken Soup for the Soul” was the keynote speaker …The Heartland Fire & Rescue in El Cajon will receive PETA’s Compassionate Fire Department Award for assisting the San Miguel Consolidated Fire Protection District in rescuing a Chihuahua who was unconscious in a mobile home fire. Firefighter Rob Laatsch and paramedic Travis Timmins revived the dog and got it to an animal hospital. The Alpine and Viejas fire departments also received a PETA award recently for rescuing a dog stuck in a narrow crevasse … The Chula Vista Nature Center has entered into a $125,000 contract with the San Diego Unified Port District to support several of the center’s environmental education and endangered species programs. Part of the funding will support the Nature Center’s exhibit Washed Ashore, an art project which will be displayed at the facility through July 2012. Additional funding from the Port will be directed to the center’s Nature Day Camp program which provides education and entertainment. Funds will also support the center’s endangered Eastern Pacific Green Sea Turtles Program … Office Depot celebrated its newly remodeled store in National City. During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the Office Depot Foundation contributed 300 “sackpacks” to the Community Youth Athletic Center and the Jackie Robinson Family Branch YMCA. The sackpack donations are part of the Office Depot Foundation’s National Backpack program, through which it donates sackpacks to deserving children across the U.S. and elsewhere … The Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego kicked off its annual Dream House Raffle. The grand prize is a $2.2 million home located in Encinitas. All proceeds from the 2012 Dream House Raffle will help support the RMHSD, which provides a comforting home and supportive services — including food and lodging — to families with critically ill or injured children being treated at local hospitals … Nina Church, Liza Gurtin and Ethan Lew were honored by the Jewish Community Foundation with its Peter Chortek Leadership Award. The three each received $3,600 plus an additional $1,800 in a donor advised fund at the Jewish Community Foundation to promote ongoing philanthropy. Peter and Elaine Chortek created the award to foster Jewish communal involvement by rewarding Jewish high school students who are practicing the value of Tikkun Olam, repairing the world.
