Samba Gala Makes All the Right Moves to Support Arts Education

The New Children’s Museum’s Sambas for a Purpose gala was held at the museum Aug. 27 with Michael and Lisette Farrell as chairs and Olivia and Peter Farrell, founder of ResMed, as honorary chairs. Michael Farrell is ResMed’s president, Americas. Sponsors included ResMed, Farrell Family Foundation, Hughes Marino, US Bank, Torrey Pines Bank and Univision San Diego. The $540,000 net proceeds from the event will support free visits for any child in a disadvantaged school, provide art-making opportunities and take-home projects for kids. It will also distribute free turnkey projects and materials to every visiting educator. Museum Executive Director Rachel Teagle said, “As arts education disappears from public schools, we need the community’s help to ensure that the museum fills the gap. Every child deserves and needs access to the arts” … Sharp HospiceCare, along with Coronado Yacht Club and Cortez Racing Association hosted the Ninth Annual Sharp HospiceCare Benefit Regatta on Aug. 26 and 27. The dinner and auction was held at the Hotel del Coronado and netted $240,000 to benefit the Sharp HospiceCare’s Homes for Hospice campaign, an initiative to build specialized homes throughout San Diego that combine hospice care in a homelike setting. Sponsors included Sempra Energy, Sodexo Health Care Services, Ernst & Young, KPMG and PNC Healthcare … Junior Seau hosted the ribbon cutting of The Patch Training Facility at Oceanside High School on Sept. 13. A $25,000 grant from the Junior Seau Foundation underwrote the construction of the training facility which will be utilized by the physical education department, sports teams and the local community. “I am excited to support my community and know the students at Oceanside will see great benefits physically and mentally from the unique challenges The Patch offers,” said Seau … Torrey Pines Bank is sponsoring a 20th-century Mexican modern art collection at the San Diego Museum of Art. The bank pledged $10,000 for the Mexican modern painting from the Andres Blaisten collection, on display at the museum from Nov. 5 to Feb. 19 … Home Start has received funding for its Financial Opportunity Center. The Parker Foundation granted $20,000 and the Wells Fargo Foundation granted $15,000. The Home Start Financial Opportunity Center is located at the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation in Southeast San Diego. One of the primary goals is to offer a range of services improving self-sufficiency and eliminating barriers to services for those in need … Firefighter Tim Swanson, who works at Fire Station 21, designed a 9/11 memorial that includes steel from the World Trade Center site with the names of all of the emergency first responders who died in the terrorist attacks Sept. 11, 2001. Swanson donated his time and services. The other materials and labor were donated by Barnhart Balfour Beatty, Industrial Metal Supply, KMA Archicture & Engineering, La Jolla Stone Etching and SDG&E. The memorial was unveiled at a Sept. 9 ceremony at Fire Station 21 in Pacific Beach … The 20th Annual San Diego Heart Walk was held Sept. 17 at Balboa Park. The national sponsor for the event was Subway and the 2011 San Diego Heart Walk was presented by UC San Diego Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center. Local sponsors included Union Bank and Suffolk-Roel. Proceeds go to fund cardiovascular and stroke research … for work at a residence in Escondido … The American Red Cross San Diego/Imperial Counties Chapter will honor ten local heroes at its 9th Annual Real Heroes Awards breakfast to be held aboard the USS Midway Museum on Oct. 13 at 7:30 a.m. Rear Admiral Sean Pybus will be the keynote speaker. Pybus assumed command of Naval Special Warfare Command in July 2011.
