Salk Institute Receives Charity Navigator’s Highest Rating

For the fifth year in a row, the Salk Institute for Biological Sciences earned Charity Navigator’s highest rating: four out of four stars.

Charity Navigator is the largest independent charity and nonprofit evaluator in America with seven million visits to its website just this past year; it evaluated 8,000 charities. The organization gave Salk this rating for its fiscal management, accountability and transparency, according to a news release from the Salk Institute.

“Only six percent of the charities we rate have received at least five consecutive 4-star evaluations,” said Charity Navigator’s President and CEO Michael Thatcher in the release, “indicating that Salk Institute for Biological Studies outperforms most other charities in America.”

The Salk Institute in La Jolla received $50 million from foundations and individual donors for the 2015 fiscal year, 40 percent of its revenue, according to the release. Those donations came in the form of gifts, grants and bequests.

“In recent years, private philanthropy has become ever more critical to the Institute’s life-changing science,” said Rebecca Newman, Salk Institute vice president of external relations, in the release.
