The San Diego Foundation received a $425,000 grant from The Kresge Foundation. The funds will be used to support The San Diego Climate Initiative: Regional Climate Adaptation Leadership project. The grant will help provide training and technical assistance to advisory programs that enable local governments to adapt to the impacts of climate change. “We’re truly honored that The Kresge Foundation has recognized our work in support of the Climate Initiative,” said Emily Young, senior director, environment analysis and strategy at The San Diego Foundation. “This grant will further our mission to deepen community awareness about the local impacts of climate change and spur regional action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions” … The Classics for Kids Foundation San Diego musical performance fundraiser brought in more than $200,000. The event was co-chaired by Mark Hannah, Rita Lancaster-Hannah, Bill Hoehn, and Susan Hoehn, and held at the Hoehn’s home in Rancho Santa Fe. More than 200 people attended including Ann Evans, Kim and Marilyn Fletcher, Mike and Rocio Flynn, Doug Manchester, Peter and Peggy Preuss, and Karin Winner. The guests enjoyed musical performances by former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and the Muir String Quartet. “We started Classics for Kids to change the lives of at-risk youth around the country by opening the doors of classical music to them,” said Mike Reynolds, Classics for Kids founder and executive director. “Today, I’m thrilled to be able to bring this opportunity to kids in Southern California.” The organization provides matching grants to bring music programs and string instruments to at-risk youth. The funds raised will support new matching grants to the San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory and other string programs in Southern California … Nonprofit organization Embrace received a $100,000 Mission Support grant from Alliance Healthcare Foundation. The funds will be used to support the organization’s mission to mobilize college students to address the needs of the San Diego community. “Building upon an already solid working relationship with the AHF staff, I anticipate, with their assistance, rolling out stronger, more innovative programs to better assist the community in need,” said Sean Sheppard, founder of Embrace. “This funding will be used for program expansion, part-time positions for college students, paid internships for college students, marketing and development” … ecoATM, a locally based company that allows consumers to recycle their used electronics for cash, now offers the option for users to donate the money they would have received. The donations will go to OK Strong Disaster Relief Fund and the company has pledged to match all donations made by recycling electronics at an ecoATM kiosk through June 30 … The Maritime Museum of San Diego will host the Star of India’s 150th Anniversary Gala on Sept. 28. For the first time, the Star of India ship will be moored off the coast in San Diego Bay and guests will be ferried out to the sailing vessel for the event. “We are excited to be celebrating this once in a lifetime event here in America’s Finest City, out on the water and under the stars,” said Ray Ashley, president and CEO of the Maritime Museum of San Diego. “This is a special moment for San Diegans to celebrate our maritime past, present and future.” The event will benefit the San Salvador Project, a working replica of the ship that carried Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo to California in 1542, which is currently under construction at San Diego’s Spanish Landing Park.
