Fundraiser Delivers $1M on Mission to Support the Troops

The Del Mar Country Club hosted the second annual fundraiser to support the SEAL-Naval Special Warfare Family Foundation, which raised more than $1 million. The event featured a golf tournament, cocktail reception, dinner and silent auction. Guests included New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, former NFL linebacker Donnie Edwards, and chef restaurateur and TV host Brian Malarkey. T. Boone Pickens and Madeleine Pickens, the owner of the country club, announced that they would be matching all funds that were raised that evening. “

I am just honored to be able to host this event to thank our SEALs and their families for their service,” Madeleine Pickens said. “San Diego is a military town — and we want our service members to know that while they are away, their families are taken care of on the home front, safe and supported.” Auction items included an exclusive package for Mustang Monument, a wild horse eco-resort and preserve, golf lessons at the country club and dinner for 10 at three of chef Brian Malarkey’s restaurants. The funds will be used to support the programs offered by the SEAL-Naval Special Warfare Family Foundation, which offers services specifically targeted to assist the Naval Special Warfare community … Family Health Centers of San Diego received a $505,000 grant from UnitedHealthcare. The funds will be used to improve health care delivery services for community residents and patients. “This grant from UnitedHealthcare provides tremendous support as we invest in new technologies and training that will improve the delivery of services to patients who receive care through our community clinics,” said Fran Butler-Cohen, CEO of Family Health Centers of San Diego. “Through these funds we aim to build a model care coordination process that will enable us to deliver important health care services to even more people in our community.” The grant is part of a $5.2 million donation that UnitedHealthcare is awarding to nine nonprofits in California to help improve health care services for some communities … Vons, Smithfield and the United Food and Commercial Workers donated 30,000 pounds of ham to the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank. The donation was part of a nationwide effort known as “Feeding the Hungry.” Donations to the food bank drop by about 80 percent after the holiday season and sources of protein are often hard to come by. “Protein is a tough commodity, it’s very expensive,” said the food bank President and CEO James Floros. “It is the staple, the main part of the dinner plate. And this gives them a chance to put meat on the table,” said Smithfield representative Dennis Pittman … The Chargers Community Foundation is offering $250,000 in grants to San Diego schools to support and fund nutritional programs and physical fitness. High schools that are selected to receive a grant are eligible to receive up to $75,000; middle schools are eligible to receive up to $40,000; elementary schools are eligible to receive up to $30,000. The deadline to submit an application for a grant is May 3. More information can be found online at http://www.chargers.com/community/champions.html … The 32nd Annual Celebrity Chefs Cook Gala will be held April 27 to raise funds for the University of California San Diego Moores Cancer Center and the MyAnswertoCancer program, which uses DNA analysis to make personalized cancer treatment a reality. The event will feature 11 prominent chefs featuring signature hors d’oeuvres, an elegant dinner, dancing and live music. Tickets are $350 or $500 and sponsorships are available.
