The “Flying for a Cure — Reach New Heights to Cure ALS” fundraiser, held recently at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine, raised $90,000. The event was held to honor retired Capt. John Constans, who has ALS, and recognize his 30-plus year career as a pilot for the Navy, PSA and US Airways. The funds raised will be used to further ALS research through Team Godfather Charitable Foundation, a local nonprofit aiming to end the disease (also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) through support for medical research. The event featured live music, silent and live auction items and appetizers from Urban Solace, Sbicca, Pacifica, Crush and Campine Catering. Lin Constans (wife of the honoree) and Maureen Ramirez of Team Godfather Charitable Foundation served as honorary chairs of the event. Other notable attendees included “Madison” Miller from KPRI who served as emcee; Brian Maienschein, California State Assembly, District 77; Matt Gordon, acclaimed local chef; Susan Taylor, anchor at NBC; Tom Blair, and David and Patsy Marino … San Diego Chargers veteran player Quentin Jammer donated 175 Amazon Kindle e-readers to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego. The donation was made through Jammer’s Legends for Literacy program, which provided more than $12,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego to purchase the Kindle e-readers and book downloads for children to read on the devices. “I am very excited to be able to provide these e-readers to children throughout San Diego,” Jammer said. “This program helps to make reading more interactive and fun for kids in disadvantaged situations, which will help to raise reading levels.” The e-readers will be used at all 17 Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego locations … Fresh Start Surgical Gifts received a $20,000 donation from the S. Mark Taper Foundation, a Los Angeles-based private foundation dedicated to supporting nonprofits. The grant will serve as funding for Fresh Start’s Surgery Weekend Program, which provides free reconstructive surgery to children and young adults with physical deformities … Bank of America Charitable Foundation donated $10,000 to MAAC, a local organization dedicated to prompting self-sufficiency for low- and moderate-income families and communities in Southern California. The grant will be used to support services offered by MAAC including overcoming barriers to employment, enhancing income and/or obtaining employment, and promoting behaviors that lead to financial stability … Employees from BluFi Lending packed nearly 20,000 meals in one hour at The Angel’s Depot to help aid San Diego County seniors living in poverty. Forty-five BluFi staff members packed 952 boxes of food in one hour and BluFi also donated $5,000 to The Angel’s Depot to help purchase food and supplies. “BluFi employees consistently raise the bar,” said Susan Hall, founder and executive director at The Angel’s Depot. “They step up every year to serve San Diego seniors with their generous donations and exceptional volunteering, and are the kind of reliable partner our community needs. We are grateful to count BluFi Lending as a longtime supporter” … The Rancho Family YMCA will put on their 14th annual “Swing Fore The Kids” golf tournament May 13 at the Fairbanks Ranch Country Club. The money raised at the event will be used to keep programs and services at the YMCA affordable and to provide scholarships to children who want to participate in the programs, but are unable to afford it. The event will be chaired by Patrick Hanson, principal at Barney & Barney and board member of the Rancho Family YMCA.
