Event Attendees Make a Bid for a Cure to Multiple Sclerosis

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society in San Diego raised $470,000 at its 26th annual MS Dinner Auction. More than 500 guests attended the event at the Loews Coronado Bay resort, making bids ranging from $100 to $25,000 on 700 silent and live auction items. Proceeds from the event will go to MS research and programs for those living with multiple sclerosis. Pacific Wealth Management sponsored the event for the second year in a row. Justin Reckers, director of financial planning at Pacific Wealth Management, was diagnosed with MS in 2009. Steven Luke, anchor with NBC 7, served as emcee for the event … The San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine hosted the 2012 San Diego Hospice Evening of Appreciation event to give thanks to their donors for their support. Nearly 200 people attended the event held at the University Club. Richard Woltman and Doris Howell, founder of San Diego Hospice, awarded longtime supporters Daniel and Violet McKinney the Kaye Woltman Legacy Award. Special guests at the event included William and Lois Stanton, Charles and Maureen King, Jeffrey and Sheila Lipinsky, Cheryl Kendrick, and Sempra Employee Giving Network’s Terry Durbin and Sandy Pfefferkorn … The Rincon Band of Luiseño Indians donated $100,000 to the Palomar Health Foundation in support of Palomar Health’s “Building Your Healthcare System of the Future” campaign. Funds received through the campaign will go to benefit the new Palomar Medical Center in Escondido. “With this gift, the Rincon people are expressing our gratitude for the care we have received in the past and investing in future healthy living for ourselves and our neighbors,” said Bo Mazzetti, chairman of the Rincon Band … Golf apparel company Travis Mathew raised more than $30,000 at the inaugural Awesome Tour Invitational held at Sandpiper Golf Course in Santa Barbara. Proceeds will benefit Fresh Start Surgical Gifts, a locally based charity that provides reconstructive surgery to infants, young children and teens suffering with physical deformities. Participants enjoyed the chance to win a $50,000 Pro/Am purse, two rounds of golf, Travis Mathew apparel, food, entertainment and an oceanfront cocktail party … The Weingart Foundation, started in 1951 by Ben and Stella Weingart, donated $15,000 to Words Alive, a local literacy organization. The grant will be used to help the organization continue its mission of providing access to literacy and reading opportunities to at-risk and low-income families and children. Words Alive serves 1,400 children and families in San Diego County each month … PIA Ingredients, a locally based specialty food supplier, donated 126,000 pounds of garbanzo beans to the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank. The beans will be distributed to the food bank’s 350 nonprofit partners including rehabilitation centers, food pantries and low-income day care centers. “The Food Bank is very grateful to PIA Ingredients for this amazing donation,” said Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank Vice President Chris Carter … The Ocean Discovery Institute received the Earth 8 Eco Ambassadors award of $25,000 for their efforts mentoring youth through science exploration and education programs. Earth 8 Eco Ambassadors partnered with The San Diego River Park Foundation, CBS 8 and SDG&E to present the award to the Ocean Discovery Institute. ODI also received a $5,000 grant award from the Cox Cares Foundation for the institute’s work involving the community in efforts to improve the environment … The North County Philanthropy Council named Shari Sapp as “Volunteer of the Year” in a ceremony held at the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort and Spa. Sapp was nominated for the award by the Pacific Ridge School in Carlsbad where she has been volunteering since 2007. This is the fourth consecutive year that a Pacific Ridge School parent has won the award.
