Chefs Challenge-Buccaneer Ball Raises $175K for Meals on Wheels

Meals-on-Wheels Greater San Diego invited San Diegans to walk the plank at the Buccaneer Ball and fifth annual Chef Appetizer Challenge held recently. The gala raised $175,000 in critical funds to support the independence and well-being of more than 2,700 seniors in San Diego County. Captains of ceremonies included Bill Goldberg, former WWE and WWC World Champion wrestler, and Dwane Brown of PBS San Diego. The bounty hunter and auctioneer for the evening was Bill Menish. Costumed guests sampled 11 local restaurant chef’s appetizers and voted for the annual “Chefy Award,” won by Chef Rich Huarte from New York on Rye.

The San Diego Police Foundation held its 14th annual Friends of the Badge Luncheon with champion sponsor Qualcomm Inc. at the Valley View Casino Center. More than 500 people attended, raising more than $125,000 or the Police Foundation’s mission to fund equipment, technology and training for those who protect and serve. The highlight of the event occurred when Officer Tim Bell stood on stage. He had been shot while on duty and would have died there if the SWAT officers with him had not had a trauma kit supplied by community donations through the Police Foundation.

“Thanks for being our partners. Thanks for having my back,” Bell told the audience.

Proceeds from the event help ensure that things critical to public safety — such as much-needed equipment, training and outreach programs — receive funding that is not available through the city’s budget. As the Police Foundation says, “Every Dime Fights Crime.”

The Carlsbad Charitable Foundation, an affiliate of The San Diego Foundation, held its seventh annual Grant Awards Celebration and awarded $104,000 divided among seven local nonprofits.

The programs funded include Rotational Shelter Program at Interfaith Shelter Network of San Diego, CHSTV program at Carlsbad High School Television Booster Club, Friends Helping Friends project at Kids for Peace Inc., STEM Education & Career Exploration program at Encuentros Leadership, Carlsbad Science Day at Carlsbad Educational Foundation, Clean Beach Coalition project at I Love A Clean San Diego, and ENGAGE CARLSBAD! Connecting Commerce and the Community program at Sustainable Surplus Exchange. The late Matt McLaughlin left a generous legacy gift to The San Diego Foundation for use by affiliate foundations in North County. Thanks to the creation of the Live Here, Give Here Matching Program, all CCF membership-generated grantmaking funds — half of each yearly donation — will be matched dollar for dollar. Mama’s Pantry, a service of Mama’s Kitchen, provides a nutritional shopping opportunity at no cost for low-income men, women and children of San Diego County affected by HIV/AIDS. Mama’s Kitchen asks the public to participate in the fourth annual “Independence from Hunger,” an initiative to encourage individuals, businesses, schools and community groups to host food drives during July to ensure the pantry shelves are full with nutritious nonperishable food. The Independence from Hunger Food Drive campaign will take place through July 31, and the public’s help is needed to replenish the inventory during the summer months. The goal is to collect 100 barrels of nonperishable food during the month. For information, visit mamaskitchen.org/events/events.

Oceanside Charitable Foundation, another affiliate of The San Diego Foundation, held its sixth annual Grant Awards Celebration and granted $58,000 divided among seven nonprofits. The programs funded were the Bread of Life Rescue Mission in Oceanside, Leadership Summit Project at the North County LGBTQ Resource Center, CERT program at the Oceanside Community Emergency Response Team, Volunteer With A Friend program at Ivey Ranch Park Association, School of Nursing Healthcare Project in Oceanside with the California State University, San Marcos Foundation, TIP Training Academy and Resource Guide program, Trauma Intervention Program of San Diego Inc. and Oceanside REACH program at Vista Community Clinic.
