Bubble Up! Gala Gives Kids a Chance to Explore New Worlds

Ocean Discovery Institute held its annual Bubble Up! Gala at La Costa Resort & Spa. The organization celebrated the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring bestowed by the U.S. government for the institute’s efforts in these fields. The $200,000 raised will fund tuition-free programs, which engage, educate and inspire young people from urban and diverse backgrounds through science-based exploration of the ocean and nature, preparing them to be tomorrow’s scientific and environmental leaders. Carolina Barraza was a program graduate and now works as events and communications coordinator for the institute. Gen-Probe was the title sponsor; Boeing, Procopio, Cox Communications, Recon Environmental, Hughes Marino, SDG&E, Bank of America and Verizon Wireless were also sponsors … The Chula Vista Charitable Foundation, an affiliate of The San Diego Foundation, awarded $24,828 to the Chula Vista Community Collaborative. The grant will support its Family Engagement Project. The project will eliminate barriers to accessing support services, increase family engagement in support services and develop a centralized, accountable and responsive referral processing system … The Oceanside Yacht Club hosted the 10th annual charity regatta to benefit the Elizabeth Hospice. The event raised $13,600. The Elizabeth Hospice provides services to patients and families in northern San Diego County neighborhoods regardless of a person’s ability to pay … 6 Degrees 5 Year Anniversary Gala held at the Westin Gaslamp Quarter hotel raised $22,000 for Make-A-Wish Foundation San Diego. “We are honored to have the opportunity to help make wishes come true, said Matt Greene, CEO and founder of 6 Degrees, a company dedicated to offering individuals opportunities to increase their network of business contacts by participating in various social venues … Barons Market held its Sweet Summer Social recently at all of its locations in San Diego. The Back to School celebration was created by Barons as a way to give back to the community. All proceeds went to the San Diego Unified Emergency School Supplies Fund and the Boys and Girls Club of Southwest Riverside County … Mary Murray received one of Wells Fargo’s annual Volunteer Service Awards for her outstanding volunteer spirit. All proceeds from the event which is set for Oct. 20 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine go toward providing free reconstructive surgery and related medical care.
