Chamber Marks 151st Anniversary

The San Diego Regional Chamber celebrated its 151st anniversary late last month at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. The lively event drew more than 700 business leaders, who heard Chamber President and CEO Jerry Sanders detail the organization’s priorities for 2022, which include expanding bi-national economic development as part of the San Diego-Tijuana coalition and leading efforts regionally through a new project with the County of San Diego to address COVID-19 business impacts.

The highlight of the evening came when the Chamber honored San Diego Symphony CEO Martha Gilmer and philanthropists Gary and Mary West with special awards.

Gilmer, who is currently overseeing the $125 million renovation of downtown’s Symphony Hall, received the Moving San Diego Forward Award. She’s been the symphony’s CEO since 2014 and was the driving force behind the creation of the popular Rady Shell at Jacobs Park. She also hired internationally acclaimed conductor Rafael Payare as the organization’s musical director.

Gary and Mary West, founders of the West Corporation, were honored with the Herb Klein Spirit of San Diego Award for their philanthropic efforts via their Gary and Mary West Pace Program that lowers the cost of healthcare and improves healthcare access for area seniors.

Former Cubic CEO Brad Feldmann has been named the new chairman and CEO at San Diego-based Neology.

Feldmann, a well-known leader across the transportation, defense and security industries, helped turn Cubic into a dominant player in the transportation payments systems industry during the more than seven years he led that company. In 2021, Feldmann was the San Diego Business Journal’s CEO of the Year and also has been recognized as one of the World’s Most Influential Decision Makers by the Wall Street Journal’s CEO Council.

Neology, which was founded by Francisco Martinez de Velasco, provides AI-enabled smart mobility systems through its open-platform solutions. Martinez de Velasco will continue to serve as the company’s president.

“I am thrilled to join the Neology team and help take the company to the next level,” Feldmann said this week. “I am very familiar with the company, its innovative solutions and its reputation. Given the increased demand for road usage solutions and fragmentation of the market, I strongly believe there is a great opportunity to accelerate our growth to better serve our smart mobility customers.”

A “significant investment” from La Jolla philanthropist Elaine Galinson has led to the creation of the Galinson Family Endowed Chair in Palliative Care at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego, the area’s only designated pediatric trauma center.

Galinson is a passionate community leader and champion for children facing challenging health issues. Her gift comes through a donor-advised fund managed by the Jewish Community Foundation.

The first Galinson Family Endowed Chair holder, Dr. Ami Doshi, joined Rady Children’s in 2007 and is a board-certified pediatric hospitalist and palliative medicine physician. Dr. Doshi was recently named the 2021 recipient of the CSU Shiley Haynes Institute for Palliative Care Doris A. Howell, MD, Award for Advancing Palliative Care.
