Last month, XEWT Channel 12, the station owned and operated by Televisa, opened its first-ever cross-border television studio on this side of the border. Headquartered in and in partnership with Seaport Village, the XEWT Channel 12 Studio now serves as the only all-Spanish speaking broadcast studio in Downtown San Diego. It also marks the first XEWT Channel 12 network television studio to operate and broadcast from California.
Home in San Diego
“XEWT Channel 12 has been an integral part of the Cali-Baja region for over six decades and now we’re so proud and humbled to finally have a physical home in San Diego,” said Patricia Alvarez de los Cobos, president of Energy Communications and spokesperson for Televisa California. “What better place than the iconic Seaport Village.”
For Seaport Village, the addition of the television studio is part of its continuous revitalization efforts.
Scott Andrews, marketing director for Protea Properties, which manages Seaport Village on behalf of the Port of San Diego, said: “the studio space is a great addition and builds awareness to both tourists and locals. Part of the agreement is that not only will XEWT Channel 12 broadcast live from the bayside studio but to also do Seaport Village tenant features and broadcast all the destination has to offer.”
Added Rafael Castellanos, Port commissioner: “The Port of San Diego endorses partnerships that empower meaningful relationships between the public at large and San Diego Bay. XEWT Channel 12 has been a voice for San Diego’s Latino community for decades. We’re honored to welcome Televisa to Seaport Village and provide a space where they can amplify visibility for a largely underserved market and share stories from both sides of the border that may not otherwise be covered.”
60 Hours of Locally Produced Content
At 700 square feet, the studio, will officially open its doors early May. It features three production areas: an interview set, a greenscreen set and a nautical-themed set.
More than 60 hours of locally produced content will be filmed at the new studio a week, according to the company. This includes Que Buen Dia!, the network’s popular morning show that is typically filmed daily in the Tijuana studio, as well as roving lifestyle segments. The studio will also emphasize cross-border business and tourism stories and serve as a central hub for XEWT Channel 12’s reporters who will cover stories from all over San Diego County.
The Tijuana-based studio will continue to be Televisa XEWT Channel 12’s main headquarters.
The Televisa XEWT Channel 12’s studio is the latest addition to Seaport Village as part of its $2.2 million site enhancement project. It joins the likes of Mike Hess Brewing, Malibu Farm and Spill the Beans coffee and bagel shop.
