San Diego-based Sempra Energy has recently completed a wind farm in Hawaii that will generate enough clean electricity to power about 10,000 homes.
Sempra partnered with BP Wind Energy, and construction on the wind farm began in March.
The plant includes eight new wind turbines positioned on the edge of a volcano, and a 10-megawatt battery with enough power to sustain the Maui Electric Co. grid during light wind conditions.
Power has been sold to Maui Electric Co. under a 20-year contract. The wind farm’s construction is part of Hawaii’s goal to secure 40 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2030.
