Balboa Park to Get Tech Upgrades With $1 Million Donation

Visitors to Balboa Park will soon be able to enjoy Internet access and other high-tech improvements following a $1 million donation from the James Irvine Foundation to double the size of the park’s WiFi network.

According to Mayor Kevin Faulconer’s office, the funds will be used to provide technology upgrades, mainly interactive kiosks and smartphone apps, to enhance the visitor experience at the park in advance of next year’s Centennial Celebration of the park’s 100th anniversary.

The grant will be provided to the Balboa Park online Collaborative, the Balboa Park Conservancy and the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership for a variety of technology upgrades that include doubling the WiFi network to about 250 acres; creating a self-guided tour smartphone app; building self-service kiosks that allow visitors to purchase a Balboa Park Explorer Pass for admission to museums and other attractions; and an update of the park’s website.

The Centennial that celebrates the 1915 Panama-California Exposition when the park was created officially begins with the December Nights festival on Dec. 5.
