New Member

The San Diego Zoo is welcoming a new member to its executive leadership team. David Gillig is joining them as chief philanthropy officer of San Diego Zoo Global. Gillig will be leading the nonprofit conservation organization’s fundraising efforts to support the growth of the zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park. He will also be involved in the organization’s efforts to support worldwide conservation.

“David’s wealth of philanthropic experience, leadership, professionalism, strong relationships in San Diego and an inspiring global lens make him well suited to support San Diego Zoo Global,” said Paul A. Baribault, president/CEO of San Diego Zoo Global.

Gillig has extensive experience in nonprofits, having worked for Rady Children’s Hospital, the Scripps Foundation for Medicine and Science and most recently for Marts & Lundy, providing counsel to more than 150 healthcare, education, environment, and arts organizations throughout the nation.

On. Jan. 20, The Pacific Beach Town Council named local hotelier Elvin Lai as the 61st Honorary Mayor of Pacific Beach. Strongly involved in the community, he was a catalyst in his community’s implementation of the Pacific Beach Clean and Safe Program which works at the ground level to positively impact neighborhoods by helping to move people from the street to homes.

Additionally, Lai has been helping define COVID-19 guidelines for hotels to adhere to for safe reopening and actively serves on The San Diego Foundation COVID Relief Fund executive committee. Lai was also recently appointed as 2021 board chair for the San Diego Convention Center Association.

He is the fourth generation owner-operator of the Ocean Park Inn in Pacific Beach. The hotel is currently being renovated for a spring 2021 reopening.

The Cal Coast Cares Foundation is offering more than $90,000 in student scholarships. Applications are being accepted until April 16 from graduating high school seniors and foster students in San Diego and Riverside counties. The nonprofit foundation provides scholarships ranging from $2,000 to $2,500 to help with higher education.
