Feeding San Diego has hit a milestone with one of its major initiatives.
Through a series of free food distributions that it calls The Together Tour, the nonprofit has distributed more than 1 million pounds of food.
The organization announced the achievement on Aug. 9.
Since February, there have been 35 food distributions as part of the Together Tour, with over 67,000 individuals served. Every Together Tour food distribution is open to anyone in need with no requirements.
Feeding San Diego is bringing nutritious food to areas it sees as “hunger hot spots,” including Chula Vista, San Diego and Escondido.
What began as a large-scale drive-through distribution specifically for members of the hard-hit hospitality industry has evolved into a countywide series of food distributions. These will continue through the end of this year to help people whose livelihoods are affected by the pandemic.
Feeding San Diego said The Together Tour is an accomplishment because it is the first large-scale food distribution that the team has operated independently without any partners.
“We are proud to celebrate this milestone with the community. The Together Tour really is an amazing example of what we can accomplish when we unite around the goal to end hunger across San Diego County,” said Dan Shea, CEO of Feeding San Diego.
“Identifying areas where we need to get more food out into the community on a larger scale is really what The Together Tour is all about. We want people facing hunger across our community to know they are not alone. We are in this together.
“We could not have achieved this milestone of 1 million pounds of food distributed without the generosity of the community, including donors and volunteers, so thank you.”
Together Tour sites are located across the county in parking lots in Carlsbad, Chula Vista, Fallbrook, San Diego, San Marcos and Sorrento Valley. Every site has a recurring date and time and people can register in advance or drive through day-of. Those who attend the event drive through to receive at least 50 pounds of food including dry goods, fresh produce and a frozen meat protein.
The operations move very quickly, and almost 1,000 households have been served in under an hour at certain sites.
The Together Tour is also a resource for patients facing cancer as part of the organization’s Feeding Patients program, in partnership with the San Diego Padres and Curebound. At all current Together Tour distributions, patients facing cancer can drive through to receive free food assistance. Almost 350 patients facing cancer have been served to date.
