While most CBD brands go the private label route, which is when a company purchases a white label service and presents it to the customer under its brand name, Neurogan, Inc., prefers a more hands-on, quality control approach.

With this in mind, the artisan-batched CBD Co., founded in 2016 and with roughly 20 employees, set up its own hemp-growing production, said Nicklas Brandrup, co-founder. To do so, it partnered with local farms in the San Diego area, as well as on the perimeters like in Temecula and Escondido, he said. It then uses the crop to make every batch of Neurogan goods, said Brandrup, which is made fresh, by hand at its Miramar production facility.

Because it is able to control the amounts of CBD per product, Neurogan is considered the most potent CBD company in the United States, he added. All products are mirrored 100% in both full spectrum and broad spectrum, said Brandrup.

Double its Revenue

Hemp is a cannabis plant like the drug marijuana but containing little to no tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the chemical that gets people “high.” Instead, hemp contains cannabidiol (CBD), a chemical that has been used to treat everything from epilepsy to anxiety, according to WebMD.com.

Neurogan offers capsules, gummies, oils, softgels, rubs and tinctures as well as CBD products for pets and horses and a topical skincare line that launched last year. These can target areas like focus, pain and anxiety, among others, said Brandrup.

It is Neurogan’s strategic method of making its products in a traditional and non-mechanized way all while using fresh, high-quality ingredients that has kept it steadily growing, he said. The $5 million company is expected to double its revenue next year, said Brandrup, and every year after as a result.

The Powers of CBD

“The whole thing started because we grew up watching my grandma, who had bad arthritis and shaky hands, drink hemp tea at night for her ailment,” said Brandrup. “She grew hemp in her yard and used that to make this tea. It was CBD tea basically without knowing that she was harnessing the powers of CBD at the time. In 2016, when we formed the company, our thought was to bring CBD tea in a much more streamlined manner to the U.S. market. And, we put a little bit of Scandinavian tradition and heritage behind it. Meaning, we like to be transparent and maintain a really high level of integrity in the things that we do. We prefer to over deliver and under promise in general. That is how we stand out when there is so much noise in the space and so many CBD companies popping up everywhere.”

With CBD product sales surging, a new forecast predicts that the market will soar to $19.5 billion by 2025, according to reports.

The family-owned business is bootstrapped and run by Brandrup, his father and his brother. As part of the company’s commitment, Neurogan makes it a priority to make its products accessible to underserved communities, he said. To do so, it runs a special 55% discount program for seniors, healthcare workers, students, first responders, veterans and non-profits off all products, said Brandrup.

Aside from creating animal-targeted CBD products, Neurogan also donates to the industry, said Brandrup. This includes donating to animal rescue centers and horse rescue centers, the latter which is a very underserved area of pet wellness, he said. Also as part of its philanthropic arm, Neurogan sponsors the Rancho Santa Fe Attack Soccer team, said Brandrup, via a bi-annual scholarship of $2,000 that is awarded to a student.

Europe and Brazil

Neurogan plans to expand its reach, said Brandrup.

Aside from continuing to grow its footprint stateside (it is currently available in 300 doors), the company is planning to enter the European market and has already set up a joint distribution venture in Denmark, he said. It hopes to scale beyond Scandinavia to include all of Europe.

Neurogan also just signed a joint venture in Brazil, Brandrup added, for the company’s South America expansion.

This is a good time for Neurogan to implement a growth strategy - according to experts.

Mike Sill, CEO and co-founder of Sunday Scaries, a San Diego-headquartered CBD company with a focus on stress-relief products, wrote in a Forbes article last month, “CBD sales in the U.S. hit $4.6 billion in 2020, a massive number just two years after hemp-derived cannabinoids were federally legalized. This growth is only expected to accelerate, with two notable forecasts projecting a U.S. market of $15 billion to more than $20 billion by 2025 and 2024, respectively.”
