Comic Con 2021 Postponed to 2022

Last April, following the onset of the coronavirus crisis stateside, San Diego Comic Con 2020 was cancelled, marking the first time the event didn’t take place in its 50-year history.

As of last week, Comic Con 2021, originally scheduled to take place from July 22 to July 25, has also been postponed, according to organizers. Instead, much like last year, the live event will be held online, again. A smaller, in-person event will be planned for later in the year, it was revealed.

Comic-Con@Home

“Never could we have imagined what the world experienced in 2020 and continues to experience today,” posted a representative from the San Diego Comic Convention on the Comic-Con.org site. “While we are buoyed by the rollout of the vaccine and the growing number of individuals being inoculated, it appears that July will still be too early to safely hold an in-person event of the magnitude of Comic-Con. For this reason, we have made the challenging decision to postpone Comic-Con 2021 as an in-person gathering until our 2022 dates, and once again hold this year’s celebration as the free online Comic-Con@Home.”

Because of limited financial resources as a result of multiple postponements last year, this year’s online experience will only span three days (July 23-July 25), per the announcement.

As per the three-day in-person convention, considered a safer alternative at this time, according to the release. While details were limited as of press time, the organization stated it is already working on specifics like attendance capacity and badge cost, among other information that will be revealed at a future date.

Transfers or Refunds

Individuals that purchased badges for 2020 that were then rolled over to 2021, will have those badges automatically transferred to the 2022 event unless a refund is requested. Similarly, all confirmed exhibitors will receive instructions and deadlines for continued payment for Comic-Con 2022 or to request a refund. Another option will be to transfer badges or exhibitor deposits or payments toward the planned November event.

Since launching in 1970, Comic-Con has been a major economic driver to the city of San Diego. Well over 135,000 people attended Comic -Con 2019, with a direct spending of $91 million. The regional economic impact was $155 million, which included $31 million spent for lodging, $13.2 for meals and beverages, $6 million on retail shopping, $3.4 million on attractions and nearly $4 million on local transportation.
