Tiled Raises $1.5M, Hires Former Adobe Exec

Tiled, a Rancho Bernardo startup that helps companies make interactive marketing content, raised $1.5 million in a seed round that closed on May 20.

The company built a platform to let customers make self-contained interactive content, which it calls “microapps.” For example, users can build a presentation in PowerPoint, and use Tiled to add videos, quizzes or image galleries.

Though it’s just two years old, the company has already garnered some big-name clients. Adobe uses Tiled for its sales playbook, which its team can access online instead of printing out a large document. Vivint Solar, another customer, uses Tiled with its sales team so they can build presentations with pictures, videos and custom calculations, and send those to potential customers.

Kickstart Seed Fund, a Utah-based venture capital firm, led the most recent round of funding after leading Tiled’s initial seed round last year. Tiled Founder and CEO Darrell Swain had previously worked with Kickstart Seed Fund at his previous startup, Lucid Software, which he co-founded in 2009.

Stage 2 Capital, a venture capital firm that invests in business-to-business software companies, joined as the lead outside investor. With the oversubscribed round, Tiled has raised about $3.8 million to date.

“This is a strategic follow-on to last year’s seed round. We validated everything we set out to validate with that financing, including doubling our annual recurring revenue, and we felt it was now time to accelerate our hiring,” Swain said in a news release.

With the additional funds, Tiled will build out its sales, marketing and engineering teams. The company recently hired Jake Reni, former senior manager of inside sales for Adobe, to serve as Tiled’s vice president of sales.

“Jake is a proven builder and leader of sales teams,” Swain said. “He is a thought leader when it comes to high-performance sales. We are excited to work with Jake to teach companies how to reinvent the marketing and sales experience using interactive content to improve outcomes.”
