Robert Price

Chairman, PriceSmart Inc.

Robert E. Price is co-founder and Chairman of PriceSmart Inc., the warehouse-retail company started by he and his father, the late Sol Price. The company recently opened its 40th store. They are located 12 countries, primarily in Latin America and the Caribbean. Sol founded FedMart in 1954 and pioneered the warehouse store concept. Robert and his father started Price Club in 1974 and sold it to Costco Wholesale in 1993, while retaining the international division that became known as PriceSmart. Price, a San Diego native, is now also chairman of Price Philanthropies Foundation, formerly called the Price Family Charitable Fund. The organization has donated scores of millions, much of it to rejevunate the City Heights area. Price sponsors the College Avenue Compact, guaranteeing admission to graduates of Hoover High School who meet prescribed scholastic standards, and the Price Community Scholars Program, providing four-year scholarships to 15 diverse SDSU students from local inner-city communities who agree to mentor City Heights middle school students for a total of four years.
