The U.S. Navy awarded General Dynamics NASSCO a $147.7 million contract to modernize the USS Cowpens, a Ticonderoga-class cruiser.
The fixed-price deal — covering maintenance, modernization and repairs — includes options which would bring the value of the contract to $154.8 million. Work is expected to run through December 2019.
The Navy opened bidding to all shipyards on the West Coast, the Pentagon said in announcing the award Aug. 14; NASSCO was the only business to make an offer. The Naval Sea Systems Command of Washington, D.C. awarded the contract.
