GroGuru, a startup in the EvoNexus technology incubator, took home first place and $25,000 in cash Sept. 28 at the Get Started San Diego pitch competition.

GroGuru’s founder and CEO Farooq Anjum competed against five other entrepreneurs, all of whom got two minutes to convince judges that their startup was worthy of investment. Other startups competing included SimpleForms, Coin Up, UpCycle, Xycrobe, and Voyager Space Technologies.

Winner GroGuru makes technology that helps farmers efficiently use water and help manage costs by providing them with real time and historical data on soil moisture, salinity, and temperature. The company makes both hardware and software, and has already deployed the technology onto 10,000 acres of farmland.

Get Started is a series of pitch competitions put on in cities across the country by Cox Business. This is the first year the competition has been held in San Diego, and organizers said the competition had 575 attendees registered for the event.
