The U.S. Air Force awarded General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. a $17.5 million contract to mate a small-diameter bomb to its MQ-9 unmanned aircraft, also known as the Reaper.
Work will be done in Poway. The project is expected to last four years.
The small diameter bomb is laser-guided. According to the Pentagon’s Nov. 27 list of contract awards, the deal calls for “integration of the Guided Bomb Unit-39B/B, also known as laser small diameter bomb onto the MQ-9 Reaper via universal armament interface on a dual carriage system.”
The Medium Altitude Unmanned Aerial System Division at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio awarded the contract.
