Are Startup Week and BIO Heading for a Scheduling Conflict?

Local biotech startups will have to choose between two major events taking place in June, as both annual conferences are scheduled in the same week.

San Diego Startup Week, which is expected to attract 4,000 to 5,000 total attendees (the largest startup event in the city), is scheduled for June 19-23. Organizers of the event have designed an entire track of presentations and events specifically tailored for biotech startups.

But if those biotechs choose to attend, they may have to skip the biggest biotech conference in the world, the BIO International Convention, which takes place in San Diego this year during the week of June 19-22.

This year, BIO is putting on a three-day startup event called Startup Stadium, which was designed to provide startups with the opportunity to engage with investors, venture philanthropists, and other top biotech startups around the world.

The Startup Stadium event will feature a pitch competition, in which 35 startups will present to a panel of experts and investors. These 35 finalists were chosen from 100 applicants, and include three San Diego startups: Xycrobe Inc., Agribody Technologies Inc., and Aquam LLC.

San Diego Startup Week has yet to update their 2017 schedule for the Biotech Track, so it is unclear if the events will take place at the same time as well as on the same date.

An executive director for San Diego Startup Week, Harrison Schaen, said he doesn’t expect the overlap to be too much of an issue. One reason is because BIO’s ticket prices start at $200 apiece and range as high as $3,000 for convention and partnering access, while Startup Week will cost less than $100.

“We’re conscious of the finances (for the attendees),” Schaen said. “We think there will be a different audience for each event, which is why we decided to continue with the biotech track even though BIO was coming the same week.”

Schaen also said he was hopeful that attendees of BIO might find their way over to Startup Week after BIO ends.

The full schedule for the biotech track will be available by this coming Monday, Schaen said.
