UCSD to Open Tokyo Office to Further Japanese Partnerships

The University of California, San Diego is opening an office in downtown Tokyo, where researchers will seek partnerships with Japan’s booming life science industry.

The goal is to encourage collaborations between UCSD researchers (and the larger San Diego innovation cluster) and industry, research, and education partners in Japan.

The Tokyo office, which will be housed in the Nihonbashi Life Science Building, is a collaboration between UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering and the UC San Diego Office of Research Affairs.

“We are very pleased the office is located at the heart of the life science hub in Tokyo, a perfect fit for UC San Diego as our two cities are seen as world leaders in life sciences and biotechnology,” said Sandra Brown, UC San Diego vice chancellor for research, in a statement.

The university, which specializes in health and medicine, was awarded a record-breaking $1.07 billion for research last year. The school has grown its research funding by $300 million in the past 10 years, even though federal cash from the National Institutes of Health has been scarce during that time period across the country. UC San Diego’s success is due in part to partnering with the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry. The new base in Tokyo will likely boost the school’s global partnerships.
