Anthem Blue Cross and DaVita VillageHealth are launching a Medicare Advantage treatment program in San Diego County designed specifically for kidney failure patients.

The collaboration announced Dec. 6 will provide services to Anthem members through an interdisciplinary DaVita team. It begins Jan. 1.

Under what is known as a chronic special needs plan, patients with end-stage renal disease will receive transportation to medical appointments, vision and dental benefits, a drug formulary designed for kidney failure patients, a nurse line staffed 24 hours and a cap on out-of-pocket spending. It requires no copays at participating primary care physicians and nephrologists.

The plan is open to all Medicare beneficiaries diagnosed with end-stage renal disease who live in San Diego.
