S.D. Police Foundation Helps Those Who Protect and Serve

The San Diego Police Foundation’s 16th annual “Friends of the Badge” luncheon was held recently at the San Diego Convention Center. Net proceeds of more than $145,000 were raised by 451 attendees who gathered to support public safety and the mission of the Police Foundation. The funding will provide much-needed equipment and training as well as impactful outreach programs to enhance police-community relations. Many of the 110 uniformed personnel present commented that the generosity of community members was a compelling demonstration that San Diegans value, respect and appreciate the job that police officers do: keeping San Diego safe. Mayor Kevin Faulconer addressed the crowd and Chief of Police Shelley Zimmerman gave a memorable keynote about the motivation for police work: to guard the heartbeat and trust of community members. Another highlight was the unveiling of artwork by local artist Michael Ray Johnson Jr.

Surf Camp

The Junior Seau Foundation Adaptive Surf Program presented by Challenged Athletes Foundation hosted the inaugural youth surf camp recently in Del Mar. This past April, the Junior Seau Foundation presented a $250,000 check to CAF to launch the program that provides universal access to surfing for kids with physical challenges, while continuing a meaningful legacy for Junior Seau. City of Del Mar lifeguards have helped develop Adaptive Surfing for injured military personnel through a weekly clinic in Del Mar and were on hand for any needed assistance and safety. CAF is also proud to announce Nike Inc.’s Hurley brand and the Del Mar lifeguards as partners in the development of the Junior Seau Foundation Adaptive Surf Program.

Center for Children

The San Diego Center for Children welcomed more than 300 guests to its 129th Anniversary Celebration at the US Grant hotel. The center offers comprehensive therapeutic and educational services to more than 1,000 children and families every day who are struggling with behavioral, emotional and mental health challenges.

The evening raised $360,000 to benefit the thousands of children and families served by the Center this year. The event honored Jim Avery and Susie Sides with the center’s prestigious PATH Award — Partners in Achieving Transformation and Hope. The evening also recognized Karalina Brunetto, a remarkable youth served by the center.
