The new year brought new leadership to the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, which runs the Sycuan casino and resort properties east of El Cajon.
Sycuan’s general council elected Cody Martinez as chairman of the seven-member tribal council. Terms for Martinez, as well as the rest of the tribal council, run 2015-2018.
Martinez succeeds Daniel Tucker in the tribal chairman role. Tucker continues to be active in civic affairs as chairman of the California Nations Indian Gaming Association, which is based in Sacramento.
Sycuan’s business enterprises, including the U.S. Grant Hotel downtown, employ 4,000 people.
