Heroes Honored During American Indian Heritage Month

Two local heroes were honored by KPBS and Union Bank for American Indian Heritage Month in November. They were selected based on their extensive community

contributions.

Dr. Daniel J. Calac, medical director of the Indian Health Council, is a member of the Luiseno Band of Mission Indians, the InterTribal Youth Advisory Board and a board member of the California State University San Marcos Foundation.

Roy Cook — tribal writer, author, journalist, native singer and artist — is the president and historian of the San Diego American Indian Warriors Association. He also serves as the tribal historian for the Southern California American Indian Resource Center.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad’s Village Clubhouse was transformed into a scary haunted house for Halloween, thanks in part to sweat equity provided courtesy of locally based Reef, a surfing sandals and apparel company. Reef allows each employee up to five paid days annually to volunteer at a charity of their choosing and this year the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad was the recipient. Thanks to the organizational skills of Carlsbad Causes for Community, or C3, an array of activities were offered for all ages and fright levels. In addition, kids were able to trick-or-treat at local businesses.

Project Wildlife, the San Diego Humane Society and the SPCA announced they are officially merged. Integrating resources and expertise ensures the continuity of efforts at saving injured wildlife. Since 1972, Project Wildlife has been the leader in saving sick, injured and orphaned wildlife in San Diego County. Now, this vital community service is officially a program of the San Diego Humane Society.

Last year, Over the Edge for Brain Cancer raised more than $100,000 to support San Diego-based brain cancer research. OTE for Brain Cancer 2013 featured “American Idol” winner David Cook and local San Diego-based brain cancer superheroes, such as University of California, San Diego neurosurgeons Dr. Bob Carter and Dr. Clark Chen. Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County recently held its 52nd Annual Gourmet Dinner, “Unmask the Magic of Mentoring,” which hosted more than 600 of San Diego’s top business and community leaders in celebration of the chapter’s mentoring success. The Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine hosted the event that was emceed by Lynn Swann, NFL Hall of Fame reciever. This year’s dinner included recognitions of influential partnerships, and honoring the Person of the Year, Michael Stone, who is founder and managing member of Freestyle Investors, a family office and diversified investment entity.

Andrews, Lagasse, Branch & Bell LLP hosted the seafood and cocktail party. During the dinner, a video displayed the staggering statistics of sex trafficking in San Diego County and how it is directly affecting our youth. Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County is working with the District Attorney’s office to create awareness and to create influential mentoring matches. A live auction raised $75,000 and a Fund-a-Match action raised $165,000. Key recognitions took place, including one for Millennium Health, a San Diego-based health solutions company, for its $100,000 donation to launch the chapter’s new Beyond School Walls program. Paul Palmer, former CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County, was recognized for his 12 years of service to the organization.

Big Brothers Big Sisters recognizes its 2014 Gourmet Dinner Sponsor, LPL Financial, for 13 years of financial and event planning support. The following organizations and individuals were recognized for their generous live auction donations: Suja Juice, ElliptiGO, Rancho La Puerta, Chris and Louise Lischewski, Tom Seidler, the San Diego Padres, T. Denny Sanford, Jeff Jacobs, the Rancho Valencia Resort, Montesquieu Winery, the Enlightened Hospitality Group, Oren Zaslansky, Hyatt Regency La Jolla, Hawaiian Airlines, and Eco Caters.

Walden Family Services, a nonprofit foster care and adoption agency, recently held its 11th annual Wine D’Vine Gala, raising nearly $300,000 to further the organization’s mission of providing care and support to foster children and families. Teresa Stivers, executive director, said the event raised nearly $50,000 more than last year and the proceeds will enable the agency to continue to advocate for San Diego’s foster youth.
