San Diego-based Bumble Bee Seafoods LLC has completed the relocation of its corporate headquarters to the historic Showley Bros. Candy Factory building in East Village, near Petco Park.
The three-story building, at 280 10th Ave. near K Street, now houses 140 company employees, after a renovation that left the exterior untouched, officials said. Bumble Bee is leasing all 25,000 square feet of the building, which is owned by the San Diego Padres and dates back to 1924.
Bumble Bee’s interior renovation maintained the building’s exposed brick walls, open barrel vaulted ceilings, visible pipes and mechanical equipment, while incorporating energy-efficient lighting and other elements geared to attaining future LEED Silver certification.
Design fixtures incorporate elements including recycled wood, equipment and fishing nets from the company’s tuna operations, and there are vintage photos showing the history of Bumble Bee and the former candy factory building.
Bumble Bee, the nation’s largest purveyor of shelf-stable seafood, moved to the new location after 12 years on Granite Drive in Kearny Mesa. A formal public inauguration ceremony at the new location is set for April 25, with city and business leaders scheduled to attend.
