Panel Explores Ways To Find Funding Off the VC Path

As the number of venture capital firms continues to decrease, some local entrepreneurs are in a quandary about where to find much needed cash. Well, capital is available — from new sources. Bob Baltera, former CEO of Amira Pharmaceuticals, will lead a panel discussion about financing life science startups outside the traditional VC route at the San Diego Venture Group’s meeting on Oct. 25 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla. The panel features Bob More of the Gates Foundation, who will discuss the emerging field of philanthropic investing; Amanda Cashin of Alexandria Venture Investments, who will detail how her firm invests in cutting-edge, disruptive life science startups; and Barry Michaels, chief financial officer of Organovo, who will discuss how his company did a reverse merger to jump-start the business. Details at are sdvg.org. … A local nonprofit organization that provides mentoring to local businesses said it has completed mentorship of its 400th business, local marketing and public relations firm AdEase. The Chairmen’s RoundTable, featuring 40-plus past and present CEOs, provides free counseling to benefit the business community. AdEase owner Stacey Nelson Smith called the mentoring invaluable: “They asked a lot of really tough questions, but … helped guide me to some really insightful and important answers.” … Scripps Health is sponsoring a “Guys Night Out,” which will focus on cancer prevention and treatment. The goal is to teach men more about prostate, testicular and bladder cancers, which strike as many as 280,000. The presentations will be held at two San Diego brew pubs Nov. 12 and 18, the first at the Modern Times Brewery in the Midway District and the second at the Green Flash Brewery in Sorrento Mesa. Blige. The money will pay for chemotherapy treatments for one year, according to a news release. … Finally, this item of note. San Diego’s SeaWorld will enter a float, titled “Sea of Surprises” in Pasadena’s 125th annual Rose Parade on Jan. 1.
