The U.S. Navy has awarded San Diego shipbuilder General Dynamics Nassco $11.2 million to design a variant of its Mobile Landing Platform ship, according to a statement from the Defense Department.
The design work, to be completed by November, would be for the third and fourth Mobile Landing Platforms of the series. The design work would create a variation called an Afloat Forward Staging Base.
The Mobile Landing Platform is 785 feet long, and is based on an oil tanker design.
The recently announced award is a modification to a previously awarded contract.
