More than 8,000 UC San Diego students are all set to graduate June 14. Festivities include a dinner and fireworks, as well as official graduation rites June 15. The ceremonies feature speeches from such famous grads as actor Robert Buckley, who has appeared on CW’s “One Tree Hill” and NBC’s “Lipstick Jungle” and Lewis Black, a standup comic, social critic and guest commentator on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.” A side note: Five-hundred students will receive Ph.D.’s while 1,225 will receive master’s degrees. The company, which is developing new technologies to make industrial chemicals from renewable feedstock rather than from fossil fuels, employs 105, including 77 who work in R&D … Don’t forget, the annual SBA Awards Dinner and Small Business Development Center conference is scheduled June 12 at the Scottish Rite Event Center in Mission Valley. The half-day gathering of entrepreneurs features a number of free workshops, including how to do business with the federal government. The event attracts 200 of the West’s best artists, and all proceeds help fund 30 San Diego programs for wounded warriors. Indeed, organizers have raised more than $1.7 million for 40,000 disabled San Diegans over the years.
