Viejas Team Members Give Santa Some Serious Competition

Viejas Casino & Resort team members and guests gathered more than 12,000 toys for The Salvation Army serving eastern San Diego County. There was a lot of excitement and anticipation during the “Big Reveal” where the curtain was raised in the DreamCatcher Lounge at Viejas Casino, all the toys are revealed on stage, and the exact number of toys raised was a record 12,017 toys. Also at this evening’s event, Viejas Community Relations presented Salvation Army Captain Terry Masango with a check for $15,000 on behalf of the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians to support the Army’s efforts in eastern San Diego County.

Just in Time for Foster Youth, a nonprofit organization dedicated ending the cycle of foster care by helping youth leaving the foster care system obtain essential transitional support for self-sufficiency, is holding its annual Just in Time for Foster Youth’s My First Home for the Holidays campaign to help dozens of transitioning youth transform empty apartments into safe, comfortable homes. The goal of this campaign, which takes place through Jan. 11, 2014, is to collect needed cash, gift cards, and in-kind donations of new household items such as pots and pans, small kitchen appliances, lamps, and bedding. Mama’s Kitchen’s announced that they surpassed their fundraising goal for the ninth annual Pie in the Sky Thanksgiving Bake Sale by selling more than 4,200 pies and raising more than $111,000 during the six-week sales period. Proceeds from this year’s pie sales will directly fund more than 37,100 free, hot and nutritious Mama’s Kitchen meals, which help ensure that no one living with AIDS or cancer will go hungry in the San Diego community. This year’s sponsors included Wells Fargo, The Original Pancake House, Sycuan Casino, Energy Radio 103.7 FM, Gay San Diego, KyXy Radio 96.5 FM, San Diego PIX, San Diego Uptown News, San Diego Magazine and SDGLN.com. Urban Street Angels and Love Cupcake Café are joining forces to donate sleeping bags to homeless youth Tuesday, Dec. 24 in Ocean Beach. The event is scheduled to take place at the Ocean Beach Dog Park parking lot at 6:30 p.m., located at West Point Loma Boulevard and Voltaire Street. Urban Street Angels will be handing out a total of approximately 850 sleeping bags to homeless youth. Urban Street Angels is a volunteer-based outreach organization that hits the streets four to six times a month to reach out to the estimated 6,000 homeless young people sleeping on the streets of San Diego each night.

Sundt Construction Inc.’s San Diego employees have selected nine local nonprofit organizations to receive Sundt Foundation grants totaling $10,000 this quarter. The Foundation is funded primarily by contributions from Sundt employees and company matching. The recipients were Fresh Start Surgical Gifts, Escondido Community Child Development Center, Survivors of Torture International, Casa de Amparo, Imperial Lions Medical Foundation, Greater La Jolla Meals-On-Wheels, Casa Youth Shelter, Assistance League of Rancho San Dieguito and the Oceanside Ivey Ranch Park Association.

Cavignac & Associates’ employees donated to 16 San Diego charities with $15,600. The monies were directed toward the Alpha Project, Wounded Warriors, Monarch School, Say San Diego, Senior Wellness Center, Toussaint Academy, Voices for Children, STARS, San Diego Center for Children, Mama’s Kitchen, Photocharity, Just in Time for Foster Youth, and Veteran’s Village, Fresh Start Surgical Gifts, A Reason to Survive and the Emilio Nares Foundation, As in previous years, Cavignac & Associates’ employees “adopted” two families through the Say San Diego program. The employees shopped for, wrapped and delivered clothing, toys and grocery gift cards to each family.
