Men’s Roles In Workplace Engender Debate

End of men in the workplace? Well not quite yet, writes Mary Blair-Loy, an associate professor and director of the Center for Research on Gender in the Professions at UC San Diego. She’s the lead author on a recent report “The Persistence of Male Power and Prestige in the Professions” which contradicts the “end of men” controversial thesis put forth by The Atlantic magazine’s Hanna Rosin, The New York Times columnist David Brooks and others … More than 400 residential real estate brokers from the county attended the Pacific Southwest Association of Realtors recent workshop in Mission Valley on the future of the nation’s real estate industry. The “ReThink” gathering focused on where the industry is headed and the future of home ownership … Carlsbad-based very high-end home entertainment equipment provider Prima Cinema Inc. was the focus of a recent Los Angeles Times piece on movies migrating to home theaters. The piece relates the story of a high net-worth Rancho Santa Fe couple who use the system to watch the most recent releases from Hollywood at $500 to $600 a pop, which pales in comparison to the $100,000 paid for the equipment, not including the $35,000 device required to stream movies to an 8 X 10-foot screen. Prima CEO Jason Pang noted in the story that close to 30 percent of all new homes constructed have a built in viewing room, and he only needs to tap a small percentage of those to be successful … Locally owned Barons Market in Point Loma says it will host a Champagne and chocolate dinner for 30 moms and their guests May 9, Mother’s Day, with the proceeds going to benefit the YWCA’s Becky’s House, a women’s shelter.
