Things would not run smoothly in a law firm without paralegals, legal assistants and, yes, legal administrators. So we need them, and they need an association where they can share their frustrations revolving around working with us. The San Diego Chapter of the Association of Legal Administrators, such an organization, announced new directors and officers recently. Jeff Talcott, administrator for Goodwin Procter LLP, will serve as president through March 2013. The San Diego County Bar Association honored its 2012 SDCBA Service Award winners last week. Winners include: James Dawe of Seltzer Caplan McMahon Vitek, outstanding attorney of the year, which recognizes an attorney who provides outstanding community service above and beyond service to the legal profession; Hon. David Gill, outstanding jurist award, which goes to a jurist who provides outstanding community service; Heather Rosing, of Klinedinst PC, service to the SDCBA, which recognizes outstanding service as a volunteer, in a role other than as an officer or director; Dean Steven R. Smith, California Western School of Law, service to the legal profession, which recognizes an individual demonstrating outstanding service to furthering the goals of the legal profession; Kim-Thoa Hoang, District Attorney’s Office, for service to diversity award; John Gomez, The Gomez Law Firm, for community service; Father Joe Carroll, founder, St. Vincent De Paul Village, for a distinguished citizen, whose work had a significant favorable impact on some facet of the legal system; Danielle Hickman, District Attorney’s Office, for service by a public attorney; Jessica Klarer Pride, of Casey Gerry Schenk Francavilla Blatt & Penfield, for outstanding service by a new lawyer; Voices for Children, distinguished organization, which recognizes a group that has over time had a significant favorable impact on some facet of the legal system; and Morrison & Foerster, which was honored with the public service award for public or community service.

Michael A. Swit has joined Duane Morris LLP in its San Diego trial practice group as special counsel. Swit augments DM’s life sciences practice, particularly in U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulatory matters. Prior to joining Duane Morris, Swit was for seven years vice president of The Weinberg Group Inc. — a scientific and regulatory consulting firm.

Paul Hastings LLP, a leading global law firm, announced last week that it is representing Ardea Biosciences, a San Diego-based biotechnology company, in its $1.26 billion all-cash acquisition by AstraZeneca, a global integrated biopharmaceutical company based in the United Kingdom. Ardea is focused on the development of small-molecule therapeutics for the treatment of serious diseases. Global merger and acquisition chair and partner Carl Sanchez led the Paul Hastings team, which also included antitrust partner Scott Hataway, tax partner Alexander Lee, senior associates Claudia Simon and Elizabeth Razzano and associates Todd Schneider, Laura McGurty and Kevin Reyes.

Two new associates have joined the San Diego office of Klinedinst PC. Thomas Daugherty is an experienced employment, real estate and commercial litigation attorney. He started his legal career in Chicago working on long-term care, products liability, medical malpractice, and lawsuits involving general liability. Michael Nalan has joined the professional liability practice group.
