Roberta and Malin Burnham were honored on at “The Preuss School Promise: Lives Transformed” presented by UC San Diego’s Preuss School. The event, held at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine, paid tribute to the Burnhams for their longtime support of The Preuss School as well as other charitable causes throughout San Diego. Malin is also a member of The Preuss School Founders Circle. Preuss, a charter middle and high school for motivated, low-income students whose parents have not graduated from college, celebrated its mission to transform lives and promote access to quality education … The Boys & Girls Clubs of Oceanside has launched a $600,000 campaign to raise funds to make infrastructure improvements on its main branch. The campaign is in conjunction with its 60th anniversary and is scheduled to be completed by October. Dunn-Edwards Paints has donated paint for the exterior and Jim Baird donated $10,000 toward the painting. Federal Heath Sign Co. donated $50,000 for new lighted signage and Directed Electronics donated $30,000 for a new interactive media room. BGCO will be looking to its friends and neighbors in the community to support the campaign … The 13th annual Sharon’s Ride.Run.Walk for Epilepsy was held in Mission Bay Park. The event attracted 2,500 attendees and raised $185,000 to benefit the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego which offers free programs and services to San Diegans suffering from seizure disorders. Event sponsors included UCB, Lundbeck Pharmaceuticals, Phil’s BBQ, Pat & Oscar’s, Cyberonics, PhRMA and San Diego Firefighters Local 145 … In 2011, the Newman’s Own Foundation, through a partnership with Fisher House Foundation, awarded the San Diego Armed Services YMCA a $300,000 grant to serve military families through 2012. From that grant, $40,000 is designated for Camp Pendleton military families for the ASYMCA’s Project Liberty Call program and residential and day camp opportunities for junior enlisted families. ASYMCA CEO Mike Landers said, “We are proud to partner to make military life easier and help our junior enlisted military and their families” … The University of San Diego honored nine outstanding alumni. The Bishop Charles Francis Buddy Award for contributions to humanitarian causes was presented to former U.S. ambassador to Qatar, Joseph Ghougassian. Sandra Chew Phillips received the Mother Rosalie Clifton Hill Award for exemplary service to the university. Six alumni received the Arthur E. Hughes Award for Career Achievement. The Alumni Honors gala and awards ceremony was held in the Joan B. Kroc Institute of Peace & Justice … Students and faculty of NewSchool of Architecture and Design recently dedicated the school’s Day of Service to preservation and enhancement efforts for the San Diego River and River Park System. NSAD’s efforts, in partnership with the San Diego River Park Foundation, reflect the school’s commitment to integrating sustainability and environmental issues through academic programs and community outreach projects.
