The New Leaders Council Institute fellows hosted the Fellows’ Fundraiser: “Funding the Future” at Belo in downtown San Diego. The Community Collaboration Award was presented to the San Diego LGBT Community Center for their outstanding work promoting equality, civic participation and youth leadership. DEI Holdings, Tri-City Medical Center, Wells Fargo, Dole Food Co., Grant General Contractors, Sony and OneSource Distributors were among the partners … HomeAid San Diego received a donation of $25,000 from Housing Opportunities Inc., an organization that was formed by the Building Industry Association of San Diego. Senior Community Centers and South Bay Community Services also received $25,000 donations … The San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum’s Caribbean Nights raised $29,000 at its social. All proceeds benefit SDCDM’s programs and exhibits for children, families and school groups. The college’s OPT program provides skills training for jobs in professional office settings in the accounting, insurance, and financial services fields … Athletes for Education founder Steven Haynes was posthumously awarded the 10News Leadership Award at a ceremony at Sunset Elementary School. The award was accepted by Steven’s father, John Haynes, on behalf of Steven who passed away in Feb. 2011. Steven founded AFE with the mission of redirecting the paths of low-income and at-risk youth within San Diego and the greater border region … The El Cajon Police Department held its 23rd Annual Police Officer Awards Ceremony. Among those being honored was Officer Jarred Slocum, who was injured during a shooting and fire in Aug. 2011. Officer Tim McFarland, who came to the aid of Officer Slocum was also recognized. Both officers received a medal of valor and Officer Slocum also received the department’s Purple Heart. Retired San Diego Police Officer David Williams received the Volunteer of the Year award for his assistance in cold case homicide and crimes of violence investigations.
