Prater to Lead BB&K; Luce Partners Find New Home at Procopio

Best Best & Krieger LLP has appointed Arlene Prater office managing partner for the San Diego office. Prater will oversee strategic direction, general operations and business development for the office, which has 33 attorneys practicing in various areas of public and private sector law. Prater practices in the firm’s Labor and Employment Group.

Prater succeeds BB&K partner Warren Diven, who served as the firm’s San Diego office managing partner since January 2008. Prater joined BB&K in October 1993. Before joining BB&K, Prater was a partner at Jennings, Engstrand & Henrikson and was employed with the San Diego County Counsel’s office.

Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch LLP appears to be the big winner from the sale of Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps to McKenna Long. Six partners have accepted positions at Procopio: Marie Burke Kenny, Phillip L. Kossy and Robert A. Levy have joined the firm’s labor and employment practice, and Dennis Doucette, Eli Mansour and Jason Femrite have joined Procopio’s business and technology practice team and will work out of Procopio’s newly opened Del Mar Heights office.

Kenny represents employers in federal and state court litigation involving wage and hour, wrongful termination, discrimination, harassment, retaliation and unfair competition claims. She also represents employers in class actions, mediation, arbitration and state and federal agency proceedings. Kossy’s practice includes areas such as discrimination and harassment litigation, wage and hour litigation, class action litigation, counseling, wrongful termination litigation, recent legislative developments, sexual harassment issues and violence in the workplace. Kossy has extensive civil litigation experience in California and United States courts, including employment and personnel, civil rights and tort liability matters for private and public sector employers. Levy primarily assists clients in solving employment problems and developing strategies to deal with employment issues, including hiring, performance, discipline and termination, workplace violence and reductions in force. He also counsels employers regarding wage and hour law, discrimination, harassment and retaliation law, and all aspects of the employment relationship.

Doucette practices in corporate, securities, mergers and acquisitions, corporate and venture financing. His mergers and acquisitions experience includes representation of buyers and sellers in mergers, stock and asset purchases, management buyouts, and related transactions. Mansour’s diverse transactional practice includes international business and intellectual property transactions, licensing, equipment finance and aviation law. He has extensive experience in a wide range of international business and intellectual property transactions with an emphasis on development, protection and licensing of technology and related intellectual property. Femrite’s practice focuses on the representation of both private and publicly held companies, funds and investment firms in a wide range of transactions from structure and formation to capitalization and finance, and sale and acquisition. His emphasis is in the areas of mergers and acquisitions, private equity, corporate and venture finance, securities, and general corporate matters.

Procopio will initially take over the former Luce space on High Bluff Drive on a short-term basis, but will seek to expand in the area permanently.

San Diego Biz Law recently named Paul Cataudella as associate attorney to oversee its newest division, civil litigation. Previously, Cataudella worked at the U.S. Attorney General’s office. In his new role, Cataudella will be responsible for the overall case operations of the personal injury, DUI and white-collar crimes.

Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP recently announced the promotion of four San Diego attorneys to partner. Jeffrey W. Forrest and J. Barrett Marum, who work out of the San Diego office, and Matthew W. Holder and Martin Bader, who work out of the Del Mar office, earned the recognition.

Forrest, who works in the firm’s real estate, land use and environmental practice group, specializes in land use planning, obtaining entitlement approvals, and land use litigation defense. Forrest’s practice also includes counseling compliance with and litigating the California Environmental Quality Act, or CEQA, National Environmental Policy Act, or NEPA, and the California Coastal Act. Marum is a member of the firm’s business trial and finance and bankruptcy practice groups. Marum practices in the areas of business bankruptcy law and commercial litigation.

Holder is a member of the firm’s business trial and labor and employment practice groups. He has a wide array of experience in complex civil litigation, as well as labor and employment litigation.
